Datacentre Migration

How do you move your IT operations to a new datacentre without having a negative impact on your business-critical IT services?  If moving house is one of the most stressful events in your life, then moving your datacentre is not for the faint-hearted. . .  When migrating a datacentre, business disruption must be carefully managed and eliminated wherever practical.  There are many risks, often with complex interdependencies.  Important elements to consider are:

  • Need for small steps to reduce risk
  • Early delivery required to meet business needs
  • Cost of running two datacentres in parallel
  • Requirements changing mid-stream
  • Budget constraints.

Client Example: Infrassistance was commissioned to devise a migration strategy for GMAC-RFC’s new datacentre.  GMAC-RFC provides on-line mortgages to brokers, so without IT the company can’t carry out its business.  As a result of our involvement in the project, GMAC RFC was able to migrate 450 servers with zero unplanned service outages, enabling the company to carry on business as usual.  The whole IT team was fully involved in every step of the migration project and has gained renewed confidence in its ability to deliver valued services to the business, both now and in the future.

Geoff Drake, Managing Director at Infrassistance, says that he wanted this migration to be ‘boring’.  He adds “Although GMAC was understandably concerned about the business risks in such a major migration and expected problems, there were none because everything was planned down to the last detail.”

  • Client Testimonial

"In a complex project like this there will always be dissent, but Infrassistance is not afraid to get people together, work things through, push back where necessary and get the necessary individuals to buy into getting the work done."
Roger Kirby, Operational Development Manager, GMAC-RFC
